Automatic Identification System (AIS)

Scope

This course provides generic training in the use of AIS.  It is designed for officers in charge of a navigational watch on ships that are fitted with such equipment.  Its main aims are to increase navigational safety and security by giving instruction on the understanding and safe use of such systems, including illustrations of dangerous or improper use of AIS.

This course includes following main subjects:

  1. Introduction
  2. Technical Aspect of AIS
  3. Use of AIS in Collision Avoidance & Maritime Security
  4. System Operation & Installation
  5. Computer Based Training and Assessment

Objectives

Those successfully completing this course shall enables trainees to acquaint themselves knowledgeably with specific AIS equipment fitted on a ship (familiarization), prior to using the equipment in a safe and beneficial manner at sea.  More importantly, this would enable them to demonstrate a thorough understanding and proficiency in the use of AIS functions through additional safety in bridge watch keeping.

Entry Standards

The course is designated both for candidates for certification as officers in charge of a navigational watch and for experienced nautical officers and other persons with responsible duties in navigation work.
